Will AI replace business development managers in Singapore?
AI will not replace business development managers outright, but it will change the job a lot. Tools can already help with market research, finding leads, drafting proposals and summarising what a client has said before, so much of the routine work is moving to software. Building trust, reading a room, negotiating terms and judging which deals are worth chasing still need a person, especially when a deal is complex. Companies may need fewer people to cover the same set of opportunities.
Why it scores 7
Business development managers perform highly digital work—market analysis, data research, proposal writing, and opportunity identification are all vulnerable to AI assistance and substantial productivity gains. However, the core value of relationship-building, negotiation, and strategic judgment creates natural barriers to full automation. AI will reshape the role by reducing headcount (fewer managers covering more opportunities) and automating support work, but human presence remains critical for closing complex deals.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What business development managers can do
Hand routine research to AI tools
Use them for first drafts of market summaries, lead lists and proposals, then check the facts yourself. This frees time for the client conversations that win deals.
Spend more time with key clients
Trust, history and a feel for what a client really needs are hard for software to copy. Put your effort into the accounts and partners where that matters most.
Sharpen your negotiation and deal judgement
Practise structuring complex deals, weighing risk and knowing when to walk away. These skills decide which deals close, and a person still has to make those calls. SkillsFuture may have options if you want structured practice.
