Will AI replace IT support technicians in Singapore?
AI tools can already handle much of the first line of IT support, such as answering common questions, sorting tickets, suggesting fixes and writing up what was done. A person is still needed to repair hardware on site, work out unusual faults, and deal with users who are stressed or stuck. Expect the routine tickets to move to software and the daily work to shift towards the harder problems.
Why it scores 6
IT support technicians have substantial digital work (ticket management, remote diagnostics, documentation, knowledge base queries) that AI can automate or significantly augment through intelligent chatbots, automated troubleshooting, and diagnostic tools. However, the role includes meaningful physical components (on-site repairs, hardware troubleshooting) and requires real-time human interaction with users in frustration contexts that creates a natural barrier to full automation. AI is more likely to make technicians far more productive than to eliminate the role, shifting focus to complex issues.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What IT support technicians can do
Use AI tools for routine tickets
Try them on password resets, setup guides and ticket summaries so you can see what they do well and where they get things wrong. Check their suggestions before passing them on to users.
Build skills in complex diagnosis
Spend time on faults that span networks, devices and accounts, where a chatbot has little to go on. These are the problems that will still reach a person.
Practise calm, clear user communication
Frustrated users need someone who listens, explains simply and tells them what happens next. Keep improving this, because software handles it poorly. SkillsFuture options may help if you want structured practice.
