Will AI replace mechanical products quality checkers in Singapore?

AI will change the routine checking in this job, but it is unlikely to replace quality checkers and testers outright. Cameras with computer vision can already spot surface flaws and measure parts against a standard, and software can run repeated tests and log the results. A person is still needed on the factory floor to handle parts, set up and monitor tests, judge unclear cases and find out why a fault keeps happening.

Why it scores 5

Visual inspection and standardized testing are increasingly automatable with computer vision and AI-powered quality systems, making this role moderately exposed to direct automation. However, the manufacturing environment, hands-on testing requirements, and need for physical presence on the factory floor provide meaningful resilience compared to purely digital work—similar to registered nurses or primary school teachers in vulnerability profile.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What mechanical products quality checkers can do

  1. Learn how automated inspection systems work

Ask to watch how camera-based checks are set up and what they miss. Knowing their limits helps you spot the faults they pass by mistake.

  2. Move towards fault diagnosis

Pay attention to why parts fail, not just whether they fail. Tracing a defect back to a machine, material or process step is harder to automate than a pass or fail check.

  3. Get comfortable with digital test records

Practise entering results, reading test data and flagging odd patterns on screens. SkillsFuture options on data basics can help you take on this kind of work as checks become more automated.
