Will AI replace postmen in Singapore?

AI is unlikely to replace postmen in Singapore. Software can already sort mail, plan routes and track parcels, which means fewer letters to carry and tighter rounds. The core job still needs a person to walk or ride to each address, handle items safely and deal with locked gates, missing letters and neighbours. Expect the paperwork around the round to shrink, while the delivery itself stays human.

Why it scores 3

Postmen face real but limited exposure from digitalization (declining mail volumes, automated sorting, AI-optimized routing), but the core function—physical delivery to multiple addresses—requires human presence and resists automation. The job is not fundamentally digital; fewer routes may exist due to reduced mail demand, but those remaining routes still need someone walking them.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What postmen can do

  1. Learn the route planning tools you are given

Routes may be redrawn by software as mail volumes change. Understand how it groups addresses, and tell your supervisor when it misses a locked gate or a blocked lane.

  2. Get comfortable with handheld scanners

More of the tracking and proof of delivery is moving onto devices. Being quick and accurate with them keeps your round smooth and your records clean.

  3. Build skills for parcels and customer contact

Letters are falling while parcels and special handling grow. Ask about SkillsFuture options for customer service and parcel handling so you can move into those tasks if your round changes.
