Will AI replace pre-press workers in Singapore?

AI tools can already do much of the routine pre-press work, such as preparing files, separating colours, cleaning up images, making PDFs and checking for common errors. Software is taking on more of these steps each year, so the daily work is likely to change a lot. People are still needed to judge colour on real paper and ink, to talk with clients about what they actually want, and to catch problems that only show up when a job reaches the press.

Why it scores 8

Pre-press work is fundamentally digital and computer-based, making it inherently vulnerable to AI automation. Core tasks—file preparation, color separation, image processing, PDF creation, and quality checking—are routine, technical, and increasingly automatable by AI vision and design systems. Limited physical presence requirements and minimal human interaction further reduce barriers to displacement.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What pre-press workers can do

  1. Learn how AI image tools work

Try the tools that clean up images and prepare files, and note where they make mistakes. Knowing their limits lets you check their output quickly and with confidence.

  2. Build your press and colour knowledge

Understand how ink, paper and press settings change the final print. This is where a person's judgement still matters most, because a file that looks right on screen can print badly.

  3. Move towards client-facing and checking roles

Take on work such as advising customers on artwork, signing off proofs and solving problems between design and press. Look at what SkillsFuture offers in general for design or print production skills.
