Will AI replace speech therapists in Singapore?
AI is unlikely to replace speech therapists in Singapore. Software can already help with writing up session notes, sorting early screening information and drafting treatment plans, which saves some desk time. The core work still needs a person in the room: listening closely, adjusting to how a patient responds in the moment, guiding the physical side of speech and swallowing, and building the trust that makes therapy work.
Why it scores 4
Speech therapists require in-person patient interaction, real-time assessment, and individualized therapeutic judgment that cannot be readily automated. The work involves physical techniques, behavioral adaptation, and a therapeutic relationship fundamental to treatment efficacy. While AI may assist with documentation, initial screening, and treatment planning, the core clinical work remains dependent on human presence and skilled human judgment.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What speech therapists can do
Let AI draft your paperwork
Try tools for session notes, reports and routine letters, then check every line yourself. Time saved on writing can go back to patients.
Sharpen your in-person assessment skills
Close observation of how a patient speaks, swallows and reacts is hard to automate. Keep practising it and share what you notice with colleagues.
Use AI for practice material only
Software can help produce exercises, picture cards and home practice sheets. Adapt them to each patient and family, since you know their needs best.
