Will AI replace veterinarians in Singapore?
AI tools can already help vets read scans and X-rays, spot patterns in lab results, and suggest treatment options, so the desk-based and screen-based parts of the work are changing. They cannot examine a nervous animal, feel for a problem, perform surgery, or make a judgement call at the bedside. Veterinarians in Singapore will likely work alongside these tools more and more, with the hands-on care and the conversation with owners staying with a person.
Why it scores 6
Veterinarians combine significant digital work (diagnostic imaging analysis, lab result interpretation, treatment planning) with essential physical presence requirements (animal examination, surgical procedures, real-time clinical judgment). AI will reshape the profession through diagnostic automation and decision support, but cannot eliminate the need for hands-on assessment and intervention with live animals.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What veterinarians can do
Try AI tools on imaging and lab work
Use decision-support tools as a second pair of eyes when reading scans and results. Learn where they are reliable and where they miss things, so you can check their output with confidence.
Sharpen your hands-on clinical skills
Examination, handling and surgery are the parts software cannot do. Keep practising them and take on varied cases, since they are what owners will still need a vet for.
Get better at explaining options to owners
Owners often face hard choices about cost and care. Practise explaining what a tool suggests, what you think, and why, in plain words. SkillsFuture options may help with communication skills.
