Will AI replace assistant civil and structural engineers in Singapore?
AI tools can already draft and check much of the routine desk work, such as drawings, standard calculations, reports and code checks, so a lot of that time is likely to shift to software. People are still needed on site to inspect work, spot problems that drawings do not show, and take responsibility for safety. Because professional sign-off and judgement sit with named people, the role changes more than it disappears.
Why it scores 7
Most work is digital—CAD design, structural analysis software, technical documentation, and compliance checking—making it inherently exposed to AI assistance and automation of routine analysis tasks. However, mandatory site inspections, physical presence requirements, and professional liability for structural safety create natural barriers; the role cannot be fully remote or automated. Assistant-level positions face higher routine-task exposure than senior engineers, but professional certification requirements and judgment-dependent decisions moderate the overall risk.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What assistant civil and structural engineers can do
Check AI output against the drawings
Treat any generated calculation, drawing or code check as a draft. Practise reviewing it line by line, so you catch errors before they reach a senior engineer.
Spend more time on site
Inspections, measurements and talking to contractors are hard for software to do. Volunteer for site visits and learn to record what you see clearly, since that experience builds trust.
Learn why the calculations work
Software can run an analysis, but someone must know when the result looks wrong. Ask seniors to explain their reasoning on loads and materials, and use SkillsFuture options to deepen your understanding of design principles.
