Will AI replace automotive engineering technicians in Singapore?
AI tools can already help with a good share of the screen-based work, such as drafting and checking CAD models, reading test data and running simulations. The hands-on side still needs a person. Someone has to set up test rigs, handle real vehicle parts, spot faults that data alone does not explain and fix problems as they appear in the workshop. Expect the desk work to speed up and change, while the physical testing stays largely in human hands.
Why it scores 6
Automotive engineering technicians work heavily with digital tools—CAD software, diagnostic equipment, and simulations—which are highly vulnerable to AI augmentation and automation. However, the role requires significant hands-on testing, real-time troubleshooting in lab/workshop settings, and specialized manual skill with physical systems, creating natural barriers to full automation. The mix of computer-based design work and hands-on technical validation places this in the high exposure range, but not very high.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What automotive engineering technicians can do
Let AI draft, then check it yourself
Use AI tools to speed up routine drawings, data sorting and simulation set-up. Always check the output against what you know about real parts, since a small error can cost a lot once it reaches the workshop.
Build up your hands-on diagnostic skills
Time spent on test rigs and live troubleshooting is the part software cannot do for you. Volunteer for physical validation work and learn to explain why a fault happens, not only that it does.
Learn how new vehicle systems work
Cars rely more and more on software, sensors and electronics. Look into SkillsFuture options that cover these areas so you can test and diagnose them with confidence.
