Will AI replace economists in Singapore?

AI tools can already run statistical models, scan large data sets, produce forecasts and draft first versions of reports, so much of the routine analysis and writing is moving to software. People are still needed to decide which question matters, check whether a result makes sense, and weigh the wider context behind the figures. Economists who advise on policy or strategy also have to explain their reasoning and answer for their recommendations, which a tool cannot do for them.

Why it scores 7

Economists work primarily with data analysis, statistical modeling, forecasting, and report writing—all fundamentally digital tasks where AI is rapidly capable. Tools like AI-powered statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and generative writing for reports pose direct automation risks. However, economists retain value through interpretation of findings, policy judgment, contextual understanding, and strategic recommendations that require nuanced human reasoning beyond routine computation.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What economists can do

  1. Let AI draft, then check everything

Use AI tools for first-pass modelling, data cleaning and report drafts, but test the assumptions and results yourself. Your value lies in spotting errors and results that look wrong.

  2. Spend more time on interpretation

Practise turning findings into clear advice on what should be done and why. Explaining trade-offs to decision-makers is the part of the job that is hardest to automate.

  3. Build depth in a specific area

Develop deep knowledge of one sector, policy area or local issue that general tools handle poorly. SkillsFuture options can help you add data or communication skills alongside that depth.
