Will AI replace librarians in Singapore?
AI tools can already catalogue items, tag records, search databases and answer many routine reference questions, so a lot of the daily desk and back-office work is moving to software. That means the job will change a great deal, though it does not mean the role disappears. People are still needed to teach others how to find and judge information, to build collections that suit a community, and to deal with patrons whose needs are unclear or sensitive.
Why it scores 8
Librarian work is heavily digital—cataloging, metadata management, information retrieval, and database systems are core tasks where AI excels and can directly automate or augment workflows. Large language models are particularly strong at reference services (answering information queries), reducing demand per librarian. However, community engagement, instruction, and collection curation retain human judgment value, preventing a rating of 9+.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What librarians can do
Check AI answers before patrons see them
Use AI tools to draft reference answers and catalogue records, then check them against trusted sources. Spotting wrong or made-up results is a skill that software cannot yet do for itself.
Shift time towards teaching and outreach
As routine queries get handled faster, offer more sessions on searching, judging sources and using AI tools wisely. Readers, students and older patrons often need a person to explain what to trust.
Strengthen your collection curation judgement
Decide what belongs in your collection and why, based on what your community actually needs. Keep notes on local interests and gaps, since this knowledge is hard for software to pick up. SkillsFuture options on data and metadata may also help.
