Will AI replace foreign exchange dealers in Singapore?
Much of what FX dealers do is already handled by software. Programs read market data, spot patterns, price currencies and place trades faster than any person can. What still needs a person is the relationship with clients, judgement when markets behave in unusual ways, and accountability to regulators and risk teams, because someone has to answer for the decisions. Expect the routine dealing to keep moving to automated systems, while the work around it changes shape.
Why it scores 8
FX dealers' work is entirely digital and centered on data analysis, pattern recognition, and trade execution—all highly automatable through AI and algorithmic trading. AI systems are already executing much FX trading (algorithmic/high-frequency trading), and machine learning enhances market analysis, risk modeling, and decision support. However, some exposure is mitigated by client relationship management, regulatory oversight, and complex judgment calls that still require human input.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What foreign exchange dealers can do
Move towards client-facing work
Clients still want someone who understands their needs, explains market moves in plain terms and earns their trust. Spend more of your time on that side of the desk, where software is weakest.
Learn how the automated systems decide
Understand what the models and trading rules your desk uses can and cannot see. People who can spot when a system is behaving badly, or when its assumptions no longer hold, remain useful.
Build your risk and compliance judgement
Unusual markets, large exposures and regulatory questions need a person who can weigh the trade-offs and take responsibility. Get closer to risk and compliance work, and use SkillsFuture to fill gaps in these areas.
