Will AI replace fund managers in Singapore?
AI tools can already scan markets, read reports, test portfolios against different scenarios and draft client updates, so a lot of the routine analysis and reporting is moving to software. Fund managers still make the final investment calls, explain them to clients and carry legal responsibility for them, and software cannot take that on. The daily work will change a lot, and one manager may be able to cover more with the same team, though this is not a forecast of job losses.
Why it scores 8
Fund/portfolio managers perform fundamentally digital work—market analysis, risk modeling, portfolio optimization, and reporting—where AI directly automates or significantly augments core tasks. While investment decisions require judgment and fiduciary accountability prevents full automation, AI tools will enable substantial workforce compression (fewer managers handling larger AUM). The role's high exposure mirrors accountants and financial analysts rather than relationship-dependent advisors.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What fund managers can do
Hand routine analysis to AI tools
Let software do the first pass on market scans, data checks and standard reports. Then check its work closely, because you stay accountable for every figure that reaches a client.
Sharpen your judgement on hard calls
Spend the time you save on the decisions models handle poorly, such as unusual market conditions and trade-offs between risk and return. Keep clear written reasons for each major decision.
Build trust with clients and committees
Practise explaining your reasoning in plain words to investors, boards and regulators. This is the part of the role that depends on people, and it is hard for software to take over.
