Will AI replace insurance underwriters in Singapore?
Much of an underwriter's routine work is already moving to software. AI tools can read applications and supporting documents, compare them with set criteria, and approve straightforward cases quickly. People are still needed for unusual or unclear risks, for judgement where the information is incomplete, and for decisions that must be explained and defended to customers, brokers and regulators. Expect the daily work to change a lot, with fewer routine cases landing on your desk.
Why it scores 8
Insurance underwriting is fundamentally digital work involving risk assessment through document analysis, data evaluation, and pattern-matching against established criteria—core AI competencies. While regulatory requirements and complex edge cases provide some protection against full automation, AI can automate routine approvals, augment decision-making in complex cases, and enable significant productivity gains, substantially reducing headcount needs across the industry.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What insurance underwriters can do
Learn how your firm's AI tools decide
Find out which cases the software approves on its own and which it sends to a person. Knowing where its judgement stops helps you spot when it is wrong.
Build skill in complex, unusual risks
Take on the cases that do not fit the standard criteria, such as odd combinations of risk or missing information. This is the work that still needs human judgement and is hardest to automate.
Practise explaining decisions in plain words
Get used to explaining to brokers and customers why a risk was accepted, priced or declined. Clear reasoning matters most when a decision is questioned, and software cannot be held to account for it.
