Will AI replace insurance and underwriting clerks in Singapore?
AI tools can already read application forms, pull out the key details, sort incoming claims and keep records up to date. That is most of what a clerk does day to day, so a lot of this routine work is moving to software. Final decisions on risk and on unusual or disputed cases still need a person who can judge the facts, talk to customers and take responsibility. A high score means the job will change a great deal, and it does not tell you how many roles will go.
Why it scores 9
Insurance/underwriting clerks perform predominantly digital, routine work—data entry, document processing, record keeping, and claims preparation—that AI excels at automating. AI document processing can extract data from applications, OCR scans, and classify claims; machine learning can flag risks and assist underwriting decisions. While human judgment is required for final underwriting decisions, the clerk's supporting role is highly automatable, making this similar to data entry and bookkeeping clerk roles with only marginal complexity differences.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What insurance and underwriting clerks can do
Learn to check automated data extraction
Software will read forms and scans first, and someone has to catch the errors. Get good at spotting wrong names, mismatched figures and missing documents, so you become the person who signs off the output.
Move toward handling exceptions and complex cases
Ask to work on claims or applications the system cannot settle alone, such as unclear records or disputes. These need judgement and a clear explanation, which software does not replace.
Build underwriting and claims knowledge
Learn why underwriters accept, price or decline a risk, and how claims are assessed. Understanding the reasoning lets you support the decisions rather than only prepare the paperwork. SkillsFuture options may help you find suitable study.
