Will AI replace kitchen assistants in Singapore?
AI is unlikely to replace kitchen assistants in Singapore. The work is hands-on: washing, peeling, chopping, assembling and cleaning in a busy kitchen, alongside cooks who need things ready at the right moment. Software can help with ordering, stock lists and scheduling, but it cannot do the physical prep or respond to what is happening at the next station.
Why it scores 1
Kitchen assistants perform inherently physical work requiring on-site presence, manual dexterity, and real-time coordination with kitchen staff. The work cannot be automated or conducted remotely, and while some industrial food-prep machinery exists, kitchen assistants perform the majority of prep, assembly, and cleaning tasks that have strong natural barriers to AI substitution.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What kitchen assistants can do
Get good at several prep stations
Learn knife work, portioning and plating for more than one type of dish. A person who can step in anywhere in the kitchen is harder to replace and easier to rely on.
Learn to use new kitchen equipment
Some kitchens bring in machines for slicing, mixing or washing. Ask to be shown how they work and how to clean them safely, so you are the one trusted to run them.
Build food safety and hygiene habits
Careful storage, labelling and cleaning matter in every kitchen, whatever tools are used. Look at what SkillsFuture offers in food handling and kitchen skills if you want to move toward a cook's role.
