Will AI replace library officers in Singapore?
AI will change a good part of the desk and back-office work of library officers in Singapore, but it is unlikely to replace the role. Cataloguing, database upkeep and routine reference searches are tasks software can already speed up or do in draft form. Helping members of the public, running programmes for the community and handling physical books and spaces still need a person who can listen, judge what someone needs and be present.
Why it scores 5
Library officers perform substantial digital work (cataloging, database management, reference searches) that is increasingly automatable, but patron services, community engagement, and physical collection management provide meaningful barriers to automation. The role is hybrid: routine technical tasks are high-exposure, while the interpersonal and physical components moderate overall exposure, positioning it at moderate rather than high.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What library officers can do
Check AI cataloguing drafts before they go live
Learn what automated tools get wrong in records and subject tags. Your judgement on accuracy and consistency becomes the safeguard for the collection.
Guide patrons in using AI search wisely
Show readers how to question answers from AI tools and find reliable sources. Many people will want help telling good information from poor information, and this fits naturally into reference work.
Build your community and programme skills
Reading events, support for new readers and outreach to schools and families rely on human contact. Take on more of this work and use SkillsFuture options if you want structured learning in it.
