Will AI replace visual merchandisers in Singapore?

AI is unlikely to replace visual merchandisers in Singapore, but the design side of the job is changing. Software can already draft layout ideas, mood boards and shelf plans quickly. The physical work still needs a person on the shop floor: dressing mannequins, adjusting displays to the real space and light, and reacting to stock that arrives or sells out. Stores also need someone with a feel for their brand and their customers, which software does not have.

Why it scores 5

Visual merchandisers face moderate AI exposure due to growing digital design tools and potential retail consolidation, but the core work—physical arrangement of displays in real-time retail spaces—is inherently hands-on with a natural automation barrier. The role's creative element is offset by its reliance on spatial execution, real-time presence, and declining retail footprints in an e-commerce-driven market, making it resistant to pure automation despite AI-assisted design becoming standard.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What visual merchandisers can do

  1. Use AI tools for first design drafts

Let software produce layout options and mood boards, then choose and refine them yourself. This frees time for the hands-on styling that clients notice most.

  2. Build your in-store execution skills

Get better at fitting displays to awkward spaces, lighting and foot traffic. Work done on site is the hardest part of the job to automate.

  3. Learn how stores read customer behaviour

Pay attention to what shoppers look at, pick up and walk past. Pairing that with your creative eye lets you explain why a display works, and SkillsFuture offers general ways to build these skills.
