Will AI replace laboratory technicians in Singapore?
AI is unlikely to replace laboratory technicians in Singapore, but it will change the routine parts of the job. Automated analysers already run many standard tests, and AI tools can help screen pathology images and flag results that look unusual. People are still needed to handle samples, fix equipment when it misbehaves, keep quality checks honest and judge results that do not fit the usual pattern.
Why it scores 5
Laboratory technicians face moderate AI exposure through automation of routine assays and AI-assisted pathology imaging, which will consolidate testing workflows. However, the work's hands-on nature—sample handling, equipment troubleshooting, quality control, and interpretation of complex or edge-case results—creates inherent barriers to full automation, requiring ongoing human judgment and real-time problem-solving.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What laboratory technicians can do
Get comfortable with automated analysers
Learn how the machines in your lab work, not only how to load them. Knowing what a fault or a drifting result looks like makes you the person the lab relies on when automation goes wrong.
Build your quality control judgement
Practise spotting when a result is off, whether from the sample, the reagent or the instrument. This is the kind of call software still struggles to make well, so it keeps your work valuable.
Learn to check AI-flagged results
As image screening tools arrive, ask how they reach their flags and where they tend to miss. Being able to confirm or overrule a flag is a skill labs will need, and SkillsFuture options may help you build it.
