Will AI replace opticians in Singapore?
AI is unlikely to replace opticians in Singapore. Software can already help with record-keeping, reading some eye test results and suggesting lens options, so some desk work will get lighter. Measuring faces, fitting and adjusting frames, handling contact lenses and talking a patient through their choices all happen in person and by hand, so those parts still need a trained person.
Why it scores 3
Opticians perform inherently hands-on work requiring physical presence, real-time patient interaction, and manual skill in fitting glasses and contact lenses—core tasks that resist automation. While modern refraction equipment has digital elements and some routine functions could be augmented by AI (diagnostic support, record-keeping), the fitting, adjustment, and personalized service delivery remain fundamentally physical and tactile, similar to other low-exposure healthcare roles like hairdressers and nurses' aides.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What opticians can do
Let software handle the paperwork
Use digital tools for patient records, prescriptions and reminders where your workplace allows it. This frees more of your day for the patient in front of you.
Keep your fitting and adjusting skills sharp
Careful frame fitting, lens measurement and contact lens teaching are the hardest parts to automate. Practise them often and help newer colleagues learn them too.
Learn how new testing equipment works
Eye testing machines are getting more digital and more automated. Understand what they measure and where they can be wrong, so you can check the result and explain it to patients. SkillsFuture support may help if you want formal learning.
