Will AI replace office and library attendants in Singapore?
AI is unlikely to replace office and library attendants in Singapore. Most of the job is physical: shelving books, sorting and moving files, tidying work areas and helping people in person, and software cannot do that. Tools can already help with routine screen work such as checking items in and out or keeping stock records, but that is a small part of the day. People still need someone on site who can find things, carry them and answer a question face to face.
Why it scores 2
Office/Library attendants perform primarily physical work—shelving materials, organizing files, managing inventory—that requires real-time presence in a physical location. While some routine digital tasks (circulation systems, basic data entry) could see incremental automation, the role's core dependence on manual dexterity, movement, and direct human interaction with patrons and staff creates natural barriers to AI displacement.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What office and library attendants can do
Learn the digital systems you use
Get comfortable with the catalogue, loan and inventory screens at your workplace. As more records move online, the attendant who can fix small errors and explain the system to others becomes more useful.
Offer more help to people directly
Practise finding materials quickly and explaining where things are. Face-to-face help with patrons and staff is the part of the job software cannot copy.
Look at SkillsFuture options early
Exposure is low, so there is no need to rush. Browsing general skills courses now, such as basic records handling or customer service, keeps your options open if your workplace changes how it works.
