Will AI replace optometrists in Singapore?
AI will not replace optometrists in Singapore, but it will change parts of the job. Software can already help with routine tasks such as automated eye tests, reading eye scans for early signs of disease, and handling bookings and records. A person is still needed to examine the eye, judge unusual or complex cases, explain findings to patients, and fit lenses that suit each person's face, habits and comfort.
Why it scores 5
Optometrists have moderate exposure: while AI can assist with some routine visual diagnostics (automated refraction, eye disease detection from imaging) and administrative tasks, the core work demands physical presence, real-time clinical judgment, and direct patient interaction that technology cannot replace. Licensed professionals diagnosing complex vision problems and fitting corrective solutions occupy the moderate-high boundary between clinical judgment roles and those more vulnerable to automation.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What optometrists can do
Learn to check AI scan readings
When software flags a possible problem in an eye image, you still decide whether it is right. Practise reading scans yourself so you can spot where the tool is wrong or misses something.
Spend saved time on patient care
As machines take over routine measurements, more of your value is in listening to symptoms and explaining results clearly. Put the time you save into longer conversations with patients who are worried or confused.
Build skills in complex eye conditions
Cases that do not fit a standard pattern are the hardest for software to handle. Use SkillsFuture and your own clinical practice to deepen your knowledge of conditions that need careful judgement and referral decisions.
