Will AI replace production planning clerks in Singapore?
Much of what production planning clerks do is already moving to software. Entering orders, building schedules and producing routine reports are digital tasks that planning tools and AI can do quickly, and forecasting tools can suggest what to make and when. People are still needed when plans meet the real factory floor, such as a late delivery, a machine fault or a customer who changes an order, because someone has to talk to suppliers and supervisors and decide what gives way.
Why it scores 8
Production planning clerks work primarily on computer-based systems entering data, creating schedules, and generating reports—all fundamentally digital and highly amenable to automation. AI-driven production planning systems, demand forecasting algorithms, and automated report generation can replicate or substantially augment most of this work, while generative AI can dramatically increase productivity on remaining coordination and analytical tasks. The role lacks inherent barriers (physical presence, real-time human interaction, or complex creative judgment) that would protect it from AI displacement.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What production planning clerks can do
Check and correct automated schedules
Learn to read what a planning tool suggests and spot where it ignores real limits, such as machine downtime or short supply. Being the person who catches those errors makes you more useful as the routine work shrinks.
Take on more supplier and shop floor contact
Talking to suppliers, warehouse staff and production supervisors to sort out delays is hard to automate. Spend more of your time on these conversations and less on typing in data.
Build skills in analysing production data
Practise asking why orders run late or stock runs short, and explaining it plainly to managers. SkillsFuture options in data and supply chain work can help you move from recording numbers to explaining them.
