Will AI replace security managers in Singapore?

AI will change a lot of a security manager's desk work, but it is unlikely to replace the role on its own. Software can already watch camera feeds, flag unusual activity, sort alerts and draft policy documents and risk reports. A person still has to decide how to respond when something goes wrong, lead the security team, set priorities and deal with tenants, owners and the authorities, because these calls depend on judgement and trust.

Why it scores 6

Security managers oversee both digital systems (CCTV monitoring, threat analysis, policy documentation) and operational staff, creating moderate AI exposure. While AI can enhance risk assessment and automate routine monitoring alerts, the role's core requires human judgment in real-time incident response, staff leadership, strategic policy decisions, and stakeholder coordination—factors that resist full automation. The administrative component (S$10.6k median wage, management tier) pulls exposure higher than field security roles, but operational criticality and human discretion prevent very high exposure.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What security managers can do

  1. Let software handle routine alert triage

Try AI tools on camera alerts, incident logs and first-draft reports, and check their output against what you know of the site. Learn where they raise false alarms so you can set sensible rules.

  2. Sharpen your incident command skills

Real-time decisions during emergencies, such as evacuations, break-ins or unruly crowds, stay with people. Run drills with your team and review past incidents so your judgement stays ahead of the tools.

  3. Build your risk and policy expertise

As reports and checklists become easier to produce, your value shifts to deciding what matters and why. Look into SkillsFuture options on risk assessment, data protection and working with digital security systems.
