Will AI replace university tutors in Singapore?
AI tools can already mark routine assignments, draft worked examples and answer standard questions about course content, so a good share of the repetitive work is moving to software. Tutors are still needed to sense where a student is stuck, give feedback that fits that person, and keep students motivated. Expect the role to change a lot, with more of the time spent on the human side of teaching.
Why it scores 7
University tutors have significant exposure due to highly automatable components: grading (especially routine assignments), preparing explanatory materials, and answering standard conceptual questions are all tasks AI handles well. However, the role retains some resilience through real-time mentorship, personalized feedback adapted to individual students, and motivational aspects that require human judgment, preventing it from reaching 8+.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What university tutors can do
Hand routine marking to AI tools
Try AI help on problem sets and short answers, then check its marks yourself. This frees time for the harder scripts, where judgement matters most.
Focus on live discussion and mentoring
Put more of your effort into tutorials, one-to-one sessions and office hours. A student who is confused or losing heart needs someone who notices, and AI cannot do that well.
Teach students to use AI wisely
Show students how to check AI answers, spot errors and still do their own thinking. Tutors who can guide this will stay useful to both students and lecturers.
