Will AI replace university lecturers in Singapore?
AI will change a lot of what university lecturers do, but it is unlikely to replace them. Tools can already help with literature searches, drafting slides and reading lists, writing quiz questions and marking routine work, so much of the preparation and grading is moving to software. Mentoring students, supervising theses and teaching live classes still need a person, because students need someone who knows them, can judge their ideas and can answer in the moment.
Why it scores 7
University lecturers' work is substantially digital and knowledge-intensive, making research, lecture preparation, grading, and writing highly susceptible to AI augmentation through literature review assistance, content generation, and automated assessment. However, core responsibilities like real-time mentoring, thesis supervision, and synchronous teaching create a structural floor—these require authentic human interaction and cannot be fully replaced. AI will significantly reshape the role toward higher-value mentorship while automating routine components, reducing the lecturer-to-student ratio through productivity gains.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What university lecturers can do
Let AI draft, then check everything
Use tools for first drafts of slides, reading summaries and question banks, then review them yourself. You know where the subject is subtle and where a tool tends to get it wrong.
Redesign assessments to show real understanding
Add more discussion, oral questions, live problem solving and project work, where students must explain their own thinking. These are harder to hand to a tool and tell you more about what a student knows.
Spend saved time on students
If marking and preparation take less time, put the hours into thesis supervision, office hours and feedback on ideas. This is the part of the job that stays most clearly human, so make it stronger.
