Will AI replace trailer-truck drivers in Singapore?
AI is unlikely to replace trailer-truck drivers in Singapore soon. Software can already help with route planning, fuel use and spotting faults in the vehicle, but a driver still has to handle heavy vehicles in busy traffic, bad weather and tight yards. Loading, securing cargo and dealing with sudden hazards need a person on site who can judge what is safe.
Why it scores 3
Trailer-truck drivers require physical presence in the vehicle and real-time decision-making in response to traffic conditions, weather, and safety situations—barriers that autonomous vehicle technology has not yet reliably overcome at scale. While route optimization and vehicle diagnostics are becoming AI-assisted, the core job remains dependent on human operation and judgment, making this a low-exposure role similar to taxi drivers.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What trailer-truck drivers can do
Learn the vehicle's driver-assist features
Ask your employer to show you how the safety and diagnostic systems in newer prime movers work. Drivers who understand them can spot problems earlier and trust the alerts more sensibly.
Get comfortable with digital dispatch tools
Route and job updates are increasingly sent to a screen in the cab. Practise reading them quickly and reporting delays or road problems clearly, since planners rely on what you see on the ground.
Build skills around loads and yards
Securing awkward cargo, reversing in tight spaces and handling different trailer types are hard to automate. Keep these sharp, and look into SkillsFuture options if you want to move towards supervising or training other drivers.
