Will AI replace automation technicians in Singapore?
AI tools can already help with diagnosing faults, reading logs, drafting documentation and planning maintenance, so some of the desk side of this job will get faster. Installing, repairing and testing equipment still needs a person on site, because machines are in awkward spaces and faults often show up in ways no log predicts. AI is more likely to change how technicians work than to replace them.
Why it scores 5
Automation technicians blend hands-on physical work (installation, repair, testing of equipment) with technical/digital tasks (diagnostics, system configuration, documentation), creating moderate exposure. AI can significantly enhance diagnostics, troubleshooting, and planning efficiency, but cannot fully automate the physical presence and real-time problem-solving required on-site, limiting both direct automation and indirect productivity scaling.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What automation technicians can do
Use AI for fault diagnosis first
When a system acts up, try describing the symptoms and error codes to an AI tool before digging through manuals. Check its suggestions against what you see on the machine, since it cannot see the equipment.
Let AI draft your service reports
Use it to turn rough notes into clear maintenance records and test write-ups. Read every line before you sign off, because you are still the one responsible for what the record says.
Build skills in system configuration
Spend time learning how controllers, sensors and networked equipment fit together. People who understand the whole system can judge whether an AI suggestion is safe to try. SkillsFuture support may help with this kind of learning.
