Will AI replace flight operations officers in Singapore?
AI tools can already help with much of the desk work in this job, such as drafting flight plans, spotting patterns in aircraft maintenance records and filling in routine paperwork. A person still needs to coordinate live with pilots, ground crews and airport teams when plans change. Someone must also make safety calls when information is incomplete and answer for those calls to the regulator. Expect the planning and record-keeping to speed up, while the judgement and the accountability stay with you.
Why it scores 6
Flight operations work is substantially digital (scheduling, monitoring, documentation) and benefits from AI optimization in flight planning and predictive maintenance. However, real-time coordination of complex airport operations, safety-critical decision-making under uncertainty, regulatory accountability, and constant communication with pilots and ground staff create significant barriers to automation. AI would augment planning and resource allocation, but human judgment and presence remain essential for operational safety and incident response.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What flight operations officers can do
Learn how planning tools reach their answers
When software suggests a route, fuel plan or schedule, check it against your own sense of the operation. Knowing why a tool gives a certain answer helps you spot when it is wrong.
Keep your incident response sharp
Disruptions, diversions and emergencies are where people matter most. Practise talking through unusual cases with colleagues so your decisions stay quick and clear when the tools have no good answer.
Take on the checking and sign-off role
As routine paperwork gets drafted by software, someone must verify it and own the result. Volunteer to review automated outputs and record where they fall short, so you become the person the team relies on.
