Will AI replace journalists in Singapore?
AI will change journalism a great deal, but it is unlikely to replace journalists in Singapore outright. AI tools can already summarise documents, draft routine reports, transcribe interviews and rewrite copy for different audiences, so much of the routine writing is moving to software. A person is still needed to build trust with sources, ask the right questions, check what is true and decide what matters to readers.
Why it scores 8
Journalism is fundamentally digital knowledge work—writing, research, analysis—where AI excels at routine news aggregation, initial drafting, research synthesis, and content generation. However, original investigative reporting, human source development, and editorial judgment remain harder to fully automate, providing some protection against complete displacement. The role faces very high exposure similar to copywriters and market analysts, with much routine reporting highly vulnerable while specialty investigative work retains more human value.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What journalists can do
Build your own sources and contacts
People who trust you will talk to you, and software cannot build that trust. Spend more of your time on interviews, site visits and follow-up conversations.
Use AI for the routine drafting
Let tools handle transcripts, summaries and first drafts of simple reports, then check every fact yourself. This frees time for the reporting that needs a person.
Focus on checking and original reporting
Verifying claims, spotting what is missing and explaining why a story matters are your edge. Pick a beat you know well and aim for work that a summary of existing articles cannot match.
