Will AI replace paralegals in Singapore?
AI will not replace paralegals outright in Singapore, but much of the daily work is moving to software. Legal research, document review, contract checking and first drafts are all tasks that AI tools can already do quickly, so teams may need fewer people doing them by hand. Client contact, judgement about how a case should be run, and checking that the work is right still need a person who is accountable for it.
Why it scores 8
Paralegal work is fundamentally digital and knowledge-based—legal research, document review, contract analysis, and drafting are all tasks where AI (especially LLMs) demonstrates high effectiveness. These core functions represent 60–70% of the role, making direct automation highly feasible. However, client liaison, case strategy judgment, and quality oversight retain a human element, preventing a perfect 10; the role will shrink and shift toward supervision rather than disappear entirely.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What paralegals can do
Learn to check AI-drafted documents
Practise reading AI output for missing clauses, wrong citations and invented cases. Being the person who catches these errors is a skill firms will need more of.
Take on more client-facing work
Ask to sit in on client calls, intake meetings and case updates. Explaining a matter in plain words and handling worried clients is hard for software to do.
Build your case judgement
Ask the lawyers you work with why they choose one strategy over another. Understanding the reasoning behind a case helps you move from routine tasks toward supervising the work, and SkillsFuture options may help with this.
