Will AI replace assistant electrical engineers in Singapore?
AI will change a good part of the desk work that assistant electrical engineers do, but it is unlikely to replace them. Software can already help with drafting drawings, checking circuit calculations and running simulations, so that work will get faster. Site visits, checking equipment in person and finding faults as they happen still need someone on the spot, and safety-critical decisions need a trained person to take responsibility.
Why it scores 6
Assistant electrical engineers perform substantially digital technical work—CAD design, circuit analysis, simulations, and calculations—where AI can boost productivity significantly. However, the role includes field inspections, real-time equipment troubleshooting, and hands-on technical work that requires physical presence and in-situ judgment, creating natural barriers to full automation. As a junior engineer role with safety-critical responsibilities, human oversight remains essential.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What assistant electrical engineers can do
Use AI tools to speed up drafting
Try them on drawings, calculations and simulation set-up, then check every result yourself. Knowing where the tools slip is part of doing the job well.
Build your fault-finding skills on site
Spend time with senior engineers and technicians when equipment misbehaves. Judgement from real installations is hard for software to copy, and it makes you more useful.
Get better at reviewing and explaining
Practise checking designs for safety and compliance, and explaining your reasoning clearly to colleagues and clients. As routine drafting speeds up, this is where a junior engineer adds value.
