Will AI replace oil and bunker traders in Singapore?
AI tools can already do much of the screen-based work in oil and bunker trading, such as reading market data, spotting price patterns, building forecasts and balancing a portfolio. A lot of this routine analysis is moving to software, so the daily work will change a great deal. People still matter for the judgement calls when markets turn volatile, for building trust with buyers, suppliers and brokers, and for the compliance duties that need a named person to answer for them.
Why it scores 7
Oil and bunker trading is fundamentally digital work executed on trading platforms, making it highly susceptible to AI-driven market analysis, price forecasting, and portfolio optimization. However, the role retains some resilience through relationship management with clients, complex judgment calls in volatile commodities markets, and regulatory/compliance responsibilities that still require human oversight.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What oil and bunker traders can do
Let software do the first-pass analysis
Use AI tools to scan prices, news and supply signals before you form a view. Then check the output against what you know about the physical market, since you are the one who has to defend the trade.
Deepen your counterparty relationships
Spend more time with buyers, suppliers and brokers, especially when a deal gets complicated. Trust, and knowing who will deliver when things go wrong, is hard for software to replace.
Sharpen your risk and compliance judgement
Learn to question model outputs, especially in sharp or unusual market moves. Keep up with sanctions, quality disputes and contract terms, because accountable human sign-off still matters there.
