Will AI replace securities clerks in Singapore?
AI is likely to take over much of the routine work of securities clerks. Recording transactions, matching records against each other and spotting entries that do not add up are structured tasks, and trading and settlement systems already handle a lot of them. A person is still needed when an exception does not fit the usual pattern, when a regulatory rule has to be applied with care, and when someone must answer for the final record. Expect the daily work to change a great deal, which is not the same as a forecast of job losses.
Why it scores 9
Securities clerks perform fundamentally digital work centered on recording, reconciling, and processing transactions—tasks that are highly structured, repetitive, and readily automatable. The role falls within the numerical & material recording clerks category, which anchors at 8–10 exposure; securities trading and settlement systems already automate much of this work, and AI excels at reconciliation, anomaly detection, and exception flagging. The role ranks just below maximum (10) only because some regulatory awareness and exception handling require modest human judgment, but the vast majority of daily output is directly replaceable by automation.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What securities clerks can do
Learn to check automated reconciliations
As software does the first pass of matching records, the human task becomes reviewing what it flags. Practise judging whether a flagged difference is a real error or a harmless quirk.
Build depth in handling exceptions
Failed settlements, mismatched details and unusual instructions are where people still add the most value. Learn why these cases happen and who needs to be told, so you can resolve them rather than just report them.
Move towards compliance or client-facing work
Your knowledge of how transactions are recorded and settled carries over to roles that explain, check or advise. Look at SkillsFuture options in related fields such as operations control, compliance support or client servicing.
