Will AI replace ship brokers in Singapore?
AI will change a lot of a ship broker's desk work, but it is unlikely to replace the people who close deals. Software can already scan market reports, compare vessel and cargo options, check prices against past deals and draft or review contract wording. Deals still turn on trust between owners, charterers and other parties, and on a broker's judgement about risk when terms are unclear or conditions shift. Those parts need a person who is known and accountable.
Why it scores 7
Ship brokers operate in primarily digital environments, analyzing shipping market data, drafting contracts, and matching parties—tasks where AI can automate significant portions including market research, pricing analysis, and contract review. However, the role's core value depends on relationship management, trust-based negotiation with multiple stakeholders, and judgment-driven risk assessment in complex deals, which remain difficult to fully automate.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What ship brokers can do
Hand routine research to AI tools
Use them for first drafts of market summaries, fixture comparisons and clause checks. Always read the output against the source documents before it reaches a client.
Build your judgement on deal risk
Practise spotting what a draft contract leaves out, such as unusual terms, counterparty weak points or delays that could hurt. Clients will keep paying for a broker who sees these early.
Invest more time in client relationships
Spend the hours saved on calls, visits and follow-ups with owners and charterers. Trust built over many deals is the part software cannot copy. SkillsFuture options on negotiation or data skills may also help.
