Will AI replace technical writers in Singapore?

AI tools can already draft user guides, product descriptions and step-by-step instructions from rough notes, and they can tidy and reformat existing text quickly. Much of the first-draft work is moving to software, so technical writers will likely spend less time typing and more time checking. A person is still needed to confirm the content is correct and safe, to understand what readers actually struggle with, and to decide what the documentation should cover. Technical writers who work closely with engineers and users are better placed than those who only produce text.

Why it scores 8

Technical writing is fundamentally digital, text-based work where large language models excel at generating documentation, user guides, and explanatory content. While validation of technical accuracy requires domain expertise, AI can substantially automate first drafts and reduce the per-document workload, making the occupation highly exposed to both direct substitution and productivity displacement.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What technical writers can do

  1. Use AI for first drafts, then verify

Let a tool produce a rough version of a guide or procedure, then test every step yourself. Your value is in catching what is wrong, missing or unclear.

  2. Build deeper knowledge of your product

Spend time with the engineers, testers and support staff who know how the product really behaves. Documentation that reflects real use is hard for a tool to produce without someone checking it.

  3. Learn what readers get stuck on

Look at support questions, feedback and how people use the documents. Use this to decide what to write, what to cut and how to organise it, which a draft tool cannot judge for you.
