Will AI replace telemarketers in Singapore?
AI voice systems can already make outbound calls, follow a script and answer common questions from callers, so much of the core work is moving to software. The parts that still need a person are handling upset or hesitant customers, dealing with unusual requests, and building the trust that makes someone agree to a sale. Because this job is so scripted and so easy to do over a phone line, the day-to-day work is likely to change a great deal, though this score is not a forecast of job losses.
Why it scores 10
Telemarketing is fundamentally automatable: it's entirely digital, highly scripted, and involves no physical presence or complex real-time judgment. AI voice systems can now conduct realistic outbound calls and handle inbound inquiries at scale, directly replacing the core function. The low median wage (S$4,232) reflects routine, volume-based work—exactly the profile most vulnerable to automation.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What telemarketers can do
Move towards complex or high-value calls
Routine cold calls are the easiest for software to take over. Calls that involve explaining options, comparing choices or following up with a worried customer are harder to automate, so seek those out.
Practise handling objections and complaints
Staying calm with a frustrated caller and finding a fair solution is hard for a voice system to do well. Build this skill deliberately, as it is what employers will still want from a person.
Learn to work alongside call tools
Ask your team how automated dialling, call summaries and script suggestions are used, and get comfortable checking their output. Look at what SkillsFuture offers for sales, customer service or related roles, so you have options if your tasks shift.
