Will AI replace food counter attendants in Singapore?

AI is unlikely to replace food counter attendants outright, because handing over food, handling payments face to face and sorting out problems at the counter still need a person on the spot. The bigger change comes from ordering moving to kiosks and phone apps, which can mean fewer people are needed at the counter. Software can already take orders and process payments, so the work that remains is more about the food, the customer and keeping things running.

Why it scores 5

Food service counter attendants face moderate exposure primarily through indirect effects: kiosks, mobile apps, and self-ordering systems are already reducing the volume of counter interactions and the number of positions needed, even though the core task (handing food, handling transactions) cannot be fully automated due to physical presence requirements. While direct AI automation is limited by the work's physical and social components, the trend toward reduced staffing as ordering digitizes creates meaningful job displacement risk.

The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.

What food counter attendants can do

  1. Learn the self-ordering systems well

Be the person who can help customers who get stuck at a kiosk or in an app. Knowing how the ordering flow works makes you more useful to a busy outlet.

  2. Build skills beyond taking orders

Ask to be trained on food preparation, stock checks or opening and closing routines. These tasks need a person on site and are harder for software to take over.

  3. Get better at handling customers

Practise calming upset customers, fixing wrong orders and helping people with special requests. This is the part of the job that kiosks handle badly.
