Will AI replace cashiers in Singapore?
AI will not replace every cashier in Singapore, but much of the routine till work is already moving to software. Self-checkout, contactless payments and online shopping handle scanning, totalling and card payment without a person. Cashiers are still needed for handling cash, helping customers who are stuck, checking age-restricted items and sorting out mistakes or disputes at the counter.
Why it scores 6
Cashiers face high automation risk due to self-checkout systems, mobile/contactless payments, and e-commerce reducing footfall—technology that is already proven and deployed. However, the role retains some resilience through physical cash handling, customer service judgment calls, and exception resolution that still require human presence. The trajectory is clearly toward displacement rather than elimination.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What cashiers can do
Learn to supervise self-checkout areas
Self-checkout lanes still need someone to fix errors, approve restricted items and help confused customers. Practise handling these calmly and quickly, so you are the person the shop relies on when a machine gets stuck.
Build your problem-solving skills with customers
Refunds, wrong prices, damaged goods and upset shoppers are the parts software handles badly. Get good at listening, explaining clearly and settling disputes, because this is the work that stays with people.
Explore wider roles in the shop
Cashiers already know the stock, the prices and the customers. Ask about moving into floor service, stock control or supervising, and look at what SkillsFuture offers for retail skills.
