Will AI replace architectural draughtsmen in Singapore?
AI drawing tools can already turn an architect's sketches and written specifications into a first set of technical drawings, and they speed up routine drafting a great deal. Much of the repetitive drawing work is moving to software, so the daily job will change a lot. People are still needed to check drawings against building rules, spot what cannot actually be built, and talk through changes with architects and engineers, because someone must take responsibility for the details.
Why it scores 7
Architectural draughtsmen work almost entirely in digital tools (CAD, BIM) creating technical drawings—work inherently vulnerable to AI automation. Generative design systems and AI-assisted drawing tools can increasingly automate the translation of architect specifications into technical drawings, while AI tools boost individual productivity. However, the role retains some resilience through understanding of building codes, constructability constraints, and real-time feedback from architects, placing it in the 'High' rather than 'Very High' tier.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What architectural draughtsmen can do
Check AI drawings against building rules
Practise reading generated drawings for errors in dimensions, clearances and code requirements. Your knowledge of the rules is what makes a quick draft safe to use.
Learn to direct drawing tools well
Spend time working out how to give clear instructions and fix poor first drafts. Draughtsmen who finish more sets with fewer corrections will be hard to do without.
Build your site and construction knowledge
Visit sites when you can and learn how details are put together by builders. Knowing what works in practice helps you catch problems that software misses.
