Will AI replace assistant electronics engineers in Singapore?
AI tools can already help with a lot of what assistant electronics engineers do at a desk, such as drafting circuit layouts, running simulations, writing test scripts and firmware, and producing documentation. Routine testing and first-line troubleshooting advice are also moving to software. Work at the bench still needs a person, because someone has to solder, probe real boards, and work out why physical hardware misbehaves. The daily work is likely to change a lot, and the people who check and finish what the tools produce stay useful.
Why it scores 7
Assistant electronics engineers perform substantially digital work (CAD, circuit simulation, firmware coding, automated testing) that AI tools directly augment or automate. The 'assistant' title makes junior tasks—documentation, routine testing, troubleshooting guidance—particularly vulnerable. However, hands-on bench work, soldering, and physical hardware debugging provide a meaningful barrier preventing full automation.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What assistant electronics engineers can do
Use AI tools for drafts, then check them
Let software draft test scripts, notes and first-pass code, then read the output closely against the real design. Catching what the tool gets wrong is a skill your seniors will rely on.
Spend more time at the bench
Take on hands-on tasks such as board bring-up, fault finding and measurement. Seeing how real hardware fails is the part software cannot do for you.
Learn the reasons behind each design
Ask engineers why a circuit or test is built the way it is, so you can judge a suggestion rather than just accept it. This moves you from routine tasks toward design decisions.
