Will AI replace bank tellers in Singapore?
AI is unlikely to replace every bank teller in Singapore soon, but much of the routine counter work is already moving to software. Deposits, withdrawals and simple account updates can be done through machines and phone apps, and these tools keep getting better at structured tasks. People still matter where a customer is confused, worried or dealing with something unusual, because those moments need judgement, patience and a human face.
Why it scores 7
Bank tellers' work is primarily digital and highly routine—processing deposits, withdrawals, and account transactions on computer systems. ATMs and mobile banking already handle vast volumes of self-service transactions, and remaining tasks are increasingly structured and codifiable. Physical presence and customer interaction provide some resilience, but these are declining as self-service channels mature.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What bank tellers can do
Learn the products behind the counter
Get to know loans, cards, insurance and savings options well enough to explain them clearly. Customers who need advice are less likely to be served by a machine.
Build skill in handling difficult cases
Practise dealing with fraud worries, disputes and upset customers. These cases do not follow a script, so they stay with people longer than routine transactions.
Help customers use digital banking
Show older or less confident customers how to use the apps and machines. This keeps you useful as more simple transactions move away from the counter, and SkillsFuture options may help you build related skills.
