Will AI replace receptionists in Singapore?
AI tools can already handle much of a receptionist's routine desk work, such as booking appointments, answering common questions, routing calls and entering details into a system. That is why much of the daily work is likely to change a lot. People still matter for greeting visitors in person, reading a situation, calming someone upset and dealing with the unusual request that does not fit a script. This is about how the work changes, not a forecast of job losses.
Why it scores 7
Receptionists perform highly routine, digitizable tasks—appointment scheduling, call routing, data entry—that are directly automatable by AI chatbots, IVR systems, and automated scheduling software. While the role retains a physical-presence barrier (greeting visitors, in-person reception), the majority of work product is information routing and management on a computer, making it structurally vulnerable to AI productivity gains and automation.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What receptionists can do
Learn the scheduling and chat tools
Ask your employer to let you try the booking and messaging tools that are coming in. People who can set them up and fix their mistakes are useful to any front desk.
Build your in-person strengths
Practise welcoming visitors, handling upset callers and spotting when someone needs help. These are the parts of the job a screen does not do well.
Take on tasks beyond the desk
Offer to help with event coordination, visitor experience or office support. Look at SkillsFuture options that build these wider skills, so your role is not only message handling.
