Will AI replace buyers in Singapore?
AI will not replace buyers in Singapore, but it will take over much of the routine desk work. Software can already compare prices, check supplier details, draft orders and track deliveries. People are still needed to negotiate terms, build trust with suppliers, and judge quality and risk when the numbers do not tell the whole story.
Why it scores 7
Buyers perform heavily digital work—sourcing, price analysis, supplier evaluation, order management—most of which can be significantly augmented or automated by AI for routine tasks and data processing. However, strategic supplier negotiations, relationship management, and complex judgment calls about quality, risk, and long-term partnerships create meaningful human barriers, preventing this from reaching the 8–9 range of more routine analytical roles.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What buyers can do
Hand routine ordering to AI tools
Let software draft purchase orders, compare quotes and flag late deliveries, then check its work before anything is sent. This frees your time for the supplier conversations that matter.
Strengthen your negotiation skills
Negotiating terms, resolving disputes and agreeing long-term deals depend on trust and judgement. Practise these by taking on more of the difficult supplier discussions.
Learn to question AI recommendations
A tool may suggest the cheapest supplier without seeing quality problems or delivery risks. Build the habit of checking its choices against what you know about each supplier, and look into SkillsFuture options for data skills.
