Will AI replace purchasing agents in Singapore?
AI tools can already compare supplier prices, check goods against specifications, raise purchase orders and flag compliance problems, so much of the routine screen work in this job is moving to software. People are still needed to negotiate with suppliers, build trust over time and make judgement calls when a purchase is complex or something goes wrong. Expect the daily work to change a lot, with less time on paperwork and more on decisions and relationships.
Why it scores 7
Purchasing agents work primarily on computers managing routine, digital tasks—price comparisons, specification analysis, PO processing, and compliance checking—all readily automatable or AI-assisted. However, supplier negotiation, relationship management, and judgment calls on complex procurement decisions retain meaningful human value, preventing this from reaching 8–9 range. The role is solidly high-exposure but with clearer barriers than pure data/admin roles.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What purchasing agents can do
Let software handle routine comparisons
Try AI tools for price comparisons, specification checks and purchase order drafts. Always check their output yourself, so you spot mistakes before an order goes out.
Build stronger supplier relationships
Spend the time you save speaking with suppliers directly. Trust and good history help when you need a better deal, faster delivery or a fix for a late order.
Practise negotiation and complex sourcing
Take on harder purchases where cost, risk and quality must be balanced. These judgement calls are the part of the job that software handles least well, so use SkillsFuture options to build those skills.
