Will AI replace civil and structural draughtsmen in Singapore?
Software can already produce first drafts of drawings from a specification, fill in standard details and check layouts against common rules, so a lot of the routine drawing work is moving to tools. People are still needed to judge whether a drawing suits the real site and the engineer's intent, to catch errors the software misses, and to coordinate with engineers, builders and other trades. Expect the daily work to change a great deal, with more time spent checking and correcting than drawing from scratch.
Why it scores 8
Civil/structural engineering draughtsmen create technical drawings and plans entirely within CAD software, making the work fundamentally digital and highly automatable. AI can generate initial drafts from specifications, automate standard details, check building code compliance, and optimize layouts—reducing the need for human draughtsmen. While quality review and integration with broader engineering context provide some buffering, the routine, specification-driven nature of the role makes it susceptible to significant productivity gains and workforce reduction.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What civil and structural draughtsmen can do
Learn to direct and check AI drafts
Practise reviewing machine-made drawings line by line against the specification. Spotting wrong dimensions, missing reinforcement details or clashing elements is the skill that stays useful.
Build understanding of structural reasoning
Ask engineers why a detail is drawn the way it is, and what happens if it changes. The more you understand loads, materials and how buildings are put together, the harder you are to replace with a tool.
Take on coordination and site-facing work
Volunteer to resolve clashes between structural, services and architectural drawings, and to handle queries from the site. This needs conversation and judgement, which software does poorly. SkillsFuture support may help you add skills in this direction.
