Will AI replace marine draughtsmen in Singapore?
Many parts of marine drafting are now moving to software. AI tools can already produce first-draft hull and piping layouts, check drawings for clashes and suggest lighter or simpler structures, which is much of the routine work on screen. People are still needed to understand how a vessel is built and used, to judge whether a design meets class and safety rules, and to take responsibility for drawings that engineers and surveyors will sign off. The daily work is likely to change a lot, even though that is not a forecast of job losses.
Why it scores 8
Marine draughtsmen work almost exclusively on computers using CAD software, making their role fundamentally digital and highly susceptible to AI automation in design generation and optimization. While marine engineering standards require specialist knowledge and regulatory oversight, AI tools increasingly assist with or automate drafting tasks, generating preliminary designs and optimizing structures. The job lacks natural barriers to automation beyond compliance requirements, positioning it similarly to graphic designers and web developers in the very-high exposure category.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What marine draughtsmen can do
Use AI for first-draft layouts
Try letting AI tools produce early arrangements and detail drawings, then correct them yourself. You learn quickly where they are weak, and your checking becomes the valuable part of the job.
Deepen your knowledge of ship rules
Study the class and safety requirements behind the drawings you produce. Software can draw a plausible layout, but someone must spot where it breaks a rule or will not work on a real vessel.
Work closely with engineers and yards
Spend more time with naval architects, engineers and shipyard crews, and learn how drawings turn into steel and pipework. Knowing what happens on the shop floor helps you catch problems that software misses. SkillsFuture may help you find ways to build these skills.
