Will AI replace shipping agents and boarding officers in Singapore?
AI tools can already read and check bills of lading, manifests and customs declarations, and they can track cargo and flag compliance gaps. That is a large share of the desk work, so this part of the job will change a lot. Boarding a vessel, dealing with a master face to face, and sorting out problems with port staff, customs and shipping lines as they happen still need a person on site who can be held to account.
Why it scores 6
Shipping agents' work is substantially digital—document processing (bills of lading, manifests, customs declarations), cargo tracking, and regulatory compliance verification are all highly automatable through AI. However, the requirement for physical port presence during vessel boarding and real-time coordination with ports, customs, and shipping lines introduces barriers to full automation, placing this at high (not very high) exposure.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What shipping agents and boarding officers can do
Let software draft the paperwork
Use AI tools for first drafts of manifests and declarations, then check them yourself. Your value is catching the mismatch between documents and the real cargo.
Get stronger at live coordination
Practise handling delays, changes and disputes between the ship, port and customs. These calls rarely follow a script, and the people involved want a named person to deal with.
Learn the rules behind the forms
Know why each compliance check exists, not just how to fill it in. When a tool flags something odd, you can then judge whether it matters. SkillsFuture options may help you build this.
