Will AI replace tax accountants in Singapore?
AI will change tax accounting a great deal, but it is unlikely to replace tax accountants outright in Singapore. Software can already pull figures from financial records, check them against tax rules, draft routine returns and look up regulations, so much of the preparation work is moving to tools. People are still needed for complex tax planning, advising clients on their choices, and handling disputes with the tax authority, where judgement and trust matter.
Why it scores 8
Tax accounting is fundamentally digital work—return preparation, compliance checking, document analysis, and regulatory research are all core tasks highly susceptible to AI automation. Tools can extract and organize financial records, match against tax code requirements, and draft routine compliance documents, significantly increasing per-accountant productivity. Human judgment remains essential for complex tax planning, client advisory, and disputes, but these represent a smaller portion of daily work, limiting exposure to 8 rather than 9.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What tax accountants can do
Check what the tools produce
Review the returns and workings that software drafts, and learn where it tends to miss unusual transactions or misread documents. Being the person who catches those errors keeps your role valuable.
Move towards advisory work
Spend more time on planning, restructuring questions and explaining options to clients in plain words. These tasks depend on judgement and relationships, which tools do not replace.
Build skill in disputes and rulings
Get more practice with queries, objections and cases where the rules are unclear. Look at what SkillsFuture offers for tax law or negotiation, since these are the harder parts of the job.
