Will AI replace computer engineers in Singapore?
AI will change the daily work of computer engineers a lot, but it is unlikely to replace them outright. Much of the work happens in digital tools, and AI can already help draft circuit layouts, suggest design improvements and check designs for errors. People are still needed to decide what to build, to weigh physical limits such as heat, power and manufacturing, and to take responsibility when a design has to work in the real world.
Why it scores 7
Computer engineers work primarily in digital environments (CAD, simulations, design tools) where AI can significantly assist with circuit design, architecture optimization, and design verification. However, hardware design involves real-world physical constraints and domain-specific expertise that still require substantial human judgment—exposure is high but lower than pure software roles.
The score reads the job title, not you. Your own exposure depends on your tasks, employer and tools. A high score means the daily work changes, not that the job disappears.
What computer engineers can do
Use AI for drafts and checks
Try AI tools on routine design steps, such as first-pass layouts and verification runs. Always review the output yourself, because you remain responsible for whether the design works.
Deepen your hardware judgement
Spend more time on the parts AI handles poorly, such as physical constraints, trade-offs between cost and performance, and how a design behaves once built. This is where your experience counts most.
Build skills across hardware and software
Learn enough about the software and systems that run on your designs to talk to those teams well. Engineers who can connect both sides are harder to substitute, and SkillsFuture can help you find ways to build this.
